fl classes for Flex / FDT
May 31, 2009
If you're going to use Flash components in Flex or FDT, the Eclipse IDE is going to throw you a whole chunk of errors because it can't find the fl.* classes. I saw a solution elsewhere that provides an swc file that contains all these classes, but if you only want to use one, you'll need this file. Just add what you need to your project and it should take care of it!
Download the fl.* classes here.
A little darker

Finally had time to update some css issues and changed the overall background to pure black. Hoping to eventually reorganize and catalog all posts to relevant categories, but for now I guess it's not that big an issue.

Flashdevelop vs FDT
May 29, 2009

I've tried them both for various projects. I'll cut straight to the chase. Flashdevelop wins. Here's 5 reasons.
- FDT will set you back a few hundred (There's an open source version available but you got to prove you're a developer first). Flashdevelop is free. Oh it opens fast too.
- Flashdevelop is too easy to learn. Set up your project and open it. All your files are there. Move your project around easily by simply moving the whole directory around to whereever you want. Getting that done in FDT means more googling again and more configuration.
- F6 or CTRL + Enter automatically opens your Flash IDE and publishes the movie. In FDT you've got to go through stacks of configuration and googling to even get close to that. (FDT comes with an SWF viewer but if you live on trace statements you're in for a big surprise).
- Code hinting in Flashdevelop rummages through your classes in your project. It works out of the box. Textmate has no AS3 code hinting (technically there is but that means happy googling again and reading comment threads, setting it up is another issue). FDT has code hinting but that'll set you back a few hundred.
- Flashdevelop is too easy to use. Try changing the font size of the FDT editor. Happy googling.
You say I'm biased? I say you don't know what you're missing (and the time you could be saving!).
